HI,

I just upgraded Outlook from 2000 to 2003 and one of the features in
2000 that I really liked is no longer happening in 2003. Is there a
way to have 2003 format phone numbers the way 2000 did. For example
if you entered 11111111111 in 2000 it automatically gave you
1(111)111-1111 in the phone number field. Can 2003 be made to do that
as well?

All Outlook versions do that once you set your dialing location correctly.

Russ,

Thanks for the info, but I have just spent about an hour looking for
where to fix it. Attached is a screenshot of my current settings, is
there another place beyond what I am showing you that needs to be set
because this setting has not made Outlook 2003 format phone numbers
like 2000 did.

This appears to be a BUG (I know, I'm as shocked as all of you MS users out there who pay top dollar for software with LOUSY SUPPORT!)

Enough of that, I found that the installation of Office 2003 creates a default dialing locatio
that uses your ZIP code in place of the area code. Not sure how this happened but I a
CERTAIN I did not enter this during setup

In Outlook 2003 do the following

1) Select Folder List in the shortcuts panel (lower left corner) and select the Contacts root folder
2) Under Actions choose Call Contact --> New Call --> Dialing Options --> Dialing Props (this will selectively be available!!!
3) Under the default location ("MyLocation") check the area code, mine had my 5-digit ZIP code which broke the formatter. Chec
this carefully, it took 2-3 times for me to catch it, my mind though location, ZIP code, no problem but the column heading read
AREA CODE!!!!. Correct as needed
4) Choose Apply and/or O

After doing this my phone number auto-formatting starting working just like in Office XP and prior ..

Now, that'll be $25 Bill ..

No. So far I've seen no reproducible reports of autoformatting not working
once the dialing location is set correctly (whether you access it through
Control Panel or Outlook's Dialing options as the other poster did). Too
bad, too, because many people are looking for a way to disable the feature.
If you ever figure out how you did it, tell us.
