This may sound like a very elementary question but how
can I change an icon for a specific application. For
example, if I have a list typed up in word and save it on
my desktop, it appears as a microsoft document, how can I
make that file appear as a picture of my dog, which is
saved as a jpg. ?

Thanks for your help...

You can only change icons by class. All word documents or none. Change your jpeg to a bmp and rename it to an ico file (else the browse won't let you browse to it). Then go Start - Control Panel - Folder Options - File Types and select Word - Advanced - Change Icons.

Instead of saving the file on your desktop, try saving a shortcut to the
file instead. Right click on the shortcut + properties allows you to specify
an individual icon for each shrtcut. I think the picture has to be in icon
format rather than jpg, if you do not have software that can save a picture
as an icon try saving it as a 32x32 pixel bitmap & change the extention to
..ico - this might work but I did not try it.
