How can I change the parallel port settings in device manager? Hardware
I want to install only has defined settings.. 0x378 0x278 and 0x3BC

XP assigned it A400 ~ A407. The device manager has the area shaded
out where I thought I could change my settings.

ANY HELP would be appreciated. Please understand, I am not any sort of
computer wiz! So please, if anyone can help me has to tell me in very
simple and plain terms..

Thank you!

Is the parallel port on the motherboard or is on a PCI card ?

If it is on a PCI card you can try moving it to another PCI slot or you may be able to set a
jumper for it.

If it is on the motherboard go into the BIOS of the platform and see what settings there are
for the parallel port.

from dev mngr, choose properties for the lpt port in question, choose
resources tab, uncheck "use automatic settings", then click change
settings button.

BUT, it really should have worked ok on automatic settings - try double
checking the bios configuration for the port. also, the bios should be
doing ACPI, if not it's old and should be updated (which also requries
some care and precautions, and may in fact necessitate a repair install,
so proceed slowly...).

"If it ain't broken, don't fix it..."

I was hoping to see some insight into this problem as well.
I have an older HP Officejet all-in-one Printer/fax/copier/scanner that I
can't get to work on a Dell Demension E521. The computer didn't have a
parallel port so I added a PCI card which creates an LPT port (LPT3).
The HP software (XP updated) when installed according to HP instructions,
does not connect to the all-in-one. On boot up, XP recognizes the
all-in-one and installs the drivers and assigns the printer and fax a dot4
port which doesn't work. If I change that to match the parallel card (LPT3)
the computer will print to the printer even though it says that the printer
is disconnected, but that's it...no fax/scanner/copier. Message is "The
all-in-one is disconnected"
I think the problem has to do with the address of the parallel card; ~900.
I think the all-in-one requires a lower address ~0378/0278. I can't change
anything in XP as the menu is grayed out (maybe that's a good thing ;-).
How can I get the all-in-one to work on this machine? Thoughts;
suggestions? TIA.

Does the parallel port PCI card have jumpers ?
Does the all in one have a USB port and does the PC have a USB port ?

Does the parallel port PCI card have jumpers ?

No. That would have been nice.
Does the all in one have a USB port and does the PC have a USB port ?

The all-in-one does not have USB.

The PC does and I did try a USB to parallel cable and that didn't work.
When that failed, I checked HP's web site and it advised that a USB to
parallel cable would not work. The all-in-one would have to be connected
via a parallel card??? So, I added the parallel card, but it didn't work
either. I couldn't find any more info from the HP site.

USB to parallel port cables have a poor track record and some fail to work with some USB
chip-sets.

Pull the parallel PCI card and examine it thoroughly for jumper settings.

Also, look at the Dell BIOS for settings. And possibly, update the Dell BIOS.

Done. The card is a Startech PCI1P and doesn't have jumpers on it. I tried
switching slots; that didn't help.
Also, look at the Dell BIOS for settings. And possibly, update the Dell
BIOS.

Done. The bios shows that the card is installed and recognized as ECP which
is what the all-in-one requires. Bios update was installed and had no
effect on this issue. ?????
