The full computer name is smi_1.smi.com. As it turns out
the "_" is an illegal character that does not allow some
web apps to function. I am not an admin & I've not done
this before. but I am trying to change the smi_1 to smi01.
What is required and what are the issues with doing this.

What OS?

Actually you can't on W2k. Do you have more than one DC? If so, and it's
name is ok, demote the first one, change the name, then re-promote it back
up.

Or do you still have an NT4 BDC as part of the picture?

Heres' one method for W2k.

domain is in mixed mode]:

If W2k3, there is a domain rename tool.
