Hello,

Is there a freeware program that would allow the change of a exe
file icon? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello,

Depends on what you want.
Easy way is to create a shortcut to the exe and change the icon for that
shortcut (rightclick, change icon, etc), it will not effect the icon of
original exe.
If you really want to change the icon of the exe, you could take a look
here (never used it myself):

There might be, but if you only want to do this for the sake of showing a
different icon along a shortcut then you can do this by modifying the
properties of the link under the Windows shell. That way the icons stored
inside the EXE are unmodified, but you can still associate a different icon
with the program.

One small observation from one who has used Resource Hacker a lot:

RH is usable on programs that are rather unsophisticated or authored
by smaller business individuals selling their own stuff. Modern
commercial stuff is usually packed tighter than a drum with the
"internal works" no longer available to Resource Hacker for altering.
Further, when one does find a program with the internal icons and
textual script exposed for altering, one has to be careful to match
sizes, spacings, or risk overwriting other vital bytes...some of
which are deliberately placed.

Thanks for your explanation, reading the programs description scared me a
bit :)
Anyway, the OP was quite happy with the make-a-shortcut-and-change-that-
icon-solution, so all well end well.
