Change Drive Letters

I just installed WinXP Pro SP1 on a new PC I built. It automatically made
my hard drive H. (I had 4 USB devices connected when I installed WinXP.
They got C, D, E, F. The DVD drive got G. The hard drive got H.)

I have already changed the USB devices to I, J, K, L. I am trying to
change the hard drive from H to C but the "change drive letter" option is
not available for the hard drive.

How can I change the hard drive from H to C?

Peter

Try what again? Re-install Windows?

That would take care of the USB devices getting C, D, E & F. But that
still doesn't explain why the CD/DVD drive got a letter higher than the
hard drive. Any ideas on that?

Peter

I think he meant changing the drive letters, not installing XP? I assume
you are using Disk Ma nagem e nt to chan ge the drive letters, right?

You cannot change the drive letter for the drive that the system is
installed on. The only way to change this is to reinstall and perform a
format of the disk during the installation. You need to disconnect any other
drives before installing. I have seen the same problem with external Zip
drives that are connected during installations of XP.

I can certainly disconnect the USB devices before re-installing Windows
but I can't disconnect the CD/DVD drive as I need it for the Windows
installation CD.

How do I get around that?

No problem, once you disconnect the USB devices, the drive letters will be
sorted out automatically. The internal hard disk will become C: and the
CD/DVD will become D:. The drive letter of the CD/DVD can be changed
afterwards if desired.

The USB drives caused the problem that included the CD drive being placed
before the system drive. Disconnect the USB drives before installing and all
will be well.
