Change "Display As" field to last name 1st without re-typing?

In Outlook 2003, when I compose a new message, and then
click the To or Cc button, the contacts list displays
names that are sorted by the contact's first name. Is
there a way to automatically switch existing contacts to
display last name first?

I can do so for NEW contacts

In Outllok 2003 help, to change the name format for
existing contacts, it says: I

n the Display As field, type the name in the format that
you want. Repeat for each contact you want to change.

There must be an easier way than going into each of my
contacts and retyping last name first, isn't there??

Why don't you just change the Outlook Address Book to sort by the File As
field?
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or address
books > Outlook Address Book > Change. > Set your sort order there

Doing as you suggest has no effect on existing contacts.
Experiment with it and see if you get a different result
than me.

Of course not. It has no effects on Contacts at all. It affects the Outlook
Address Book, not the Contacts Folder. If your File As... fields are not in
the format you want, you can never get the Outlook Address Book to sort in
the format you want.
You have two choices for sorting the Outlook Address Book:
1. First, Last
2. File As...
