Hello all

I have linked an excel spreedshet to Access. Everything works fine but
my question is:
Is there a way to change the data from Access? or its read only?

I want to be able to change my excel data from a form in Access, is
this possible?

Thanks

It is possible with Access 2000 and and older. Microsoft lost a lawsuit
which forced them to issue a patch to remove that functionality in Access
2002 and 2003. Any unpatched installs of those versions would still be able
to do it, but they will lose that ability once the patch is applied.

OK. At this point I am using Office 2003 for both Excel and
Access...and I am not able to change my data from Access. What do I
need to do?

You will not be able to edit Excel linked data tables. You might be able to
use Automation code to open Excel and apply the updates that way, but I have
never attempted such a thing so I really have no idea what that process
would look like.

OO. I guess I am just going to place a button, in the form, that will
open the excel file where the user can then change the data

Thank you for your help and time.

Hi John,
This is a fairly big loss of seamlessness bewtween Access and Excel. Will
we ever go back to the previous (higher) level of interoperability? Is there
a way to settle the lawsuit in such a way so as to allow Microsoft the use of
this functionality? Thanks for your help. -David

I agree about the lost seamlessness. As for the lawsuit, the kind of
settlement you mention must have been possible at the time if only in
principle; but the fact it was not reached suggests that the patent
holder put a higher price on it than Microsoft was willing or able to
pay.

Useful though this functionality was, it's a tiny corner of today's
Microsoft Office System, and I doubt whether Microsoft sees retrieving
it as a very high priority in the overall scheme of things.

(I should make it clear that the preceding is a matter of logic, not of
inside knowledge: I don't have any!)
