Change boot drive letter

I had a dual boot syastem, Windows XP SP1 on Drive E (Second Partition
Drive 0) and Windows Server 2003 on Drive C (First partition Drive 0)
My XP SP1 file system became over time corrupted due to a bad memory
stick to the p?int that it was not recognized as a selection to
restore any more from the CD. I decided to go completely with Windows
2003 server. Everything works fine, however 2003 now thinks it is
Drive E and not drive C! I changed all the programs in my groups to
look for the correct drive letter (a pain), but I would like it to be
correct! Starting the computer from the Recovery Console from the
hard drive (I had installed it earlier before I eliminated XP) shows
my system is indeed installed on the first partition. Why does it
insist itself to be drive E and how can I fix it to be C?

Note: Windows cannot modify the drive letter of the system volume or
Boot Volume.

Any help appreciated, I do not want to format and start over.
Thanks.

I can't answer your question with regard to how to
modify the drive letter but I am hoping you can help me.
How did you remove Windows XP as a dual boot option. How
did you uninstall it? Thanks for any help.

Hi

You will need to edit the Registry. The following link may help you, but please be advised that you try this method at your own risk - some people have stated that, after using this method, their system has then been unbootable - the article is for W2K, but applies to XP as well:

Thanks alot! I will try this by this weekend when I have lots of time
in the case I have to reinstall. Either way, I will have to change
all the shortcuts back to the correct drive letter again. I will try
the program COA, I saw recommended in this group to save time.
Again THANKS!

Worked! Rebooted, I could not log on as predicted by the MSKB223188,
so I reinstalled with the repair option. I then used COA2 to restore
the drive associations in my links and registry. I used Windows
Update to bring everything back and everything works as before, all my
programs work and I lost nothing!
Thanks, Again!
