Change Auto-Replace character to Auto-Add Character

When I boot up (XP pro), my and I insert letters in a word, my
computer automatically deletes characters. Hitting the INSERT button
once takes care of that. I'm not sure what the technical term is for
that group of keys (Insert, Delete, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down.) I
am now using a Microsoft keyboard (new) but it was doing this will the
other keyboards I've had as well at least for the last six+ months.

Is there a way to set my computer up so it will automatically add
characters instead of replacing?

I don't know why it does this because it hasn't always been this way
and I didn't change anything I know of that would have done this.

This is in a Word document or all applications?

if its Word go to Tools. Options, Edit and untick overtype mode.

Hope that's it.

No, that's not it. It happens in my email program (Eudora) and a
music notation program I use called MusEdit.

There is no setting within Windows that I know of that causes a default to
Insert mode. Programs that deal with text or other keyboard input often
include these options. Check settings within each program where you run
into this problem.

You've already discovered the alternative to managing this with program
settings - checking the mode of the insert key and manually toggling it on
or off.

I finally removed the cap on the two keys labeled "Insert,"
which, as we know, toggles to overtype. At least this way, if/when I
accidentally hit the key, I'll realize my error immediately.

I hate overtype. ;)

Personally I always want to be in insert mode, not overtype, and I have a
tendency to hit the Insert key accidentally, so I disable it with a little
freeware program called SharpKeys at http://www.randyrants.com/software.html

Similarly, I never want Caps Lock to be on and I disable that key the same
way.

I agree with you, and prefer your idea to my removal of key
