Change app/exe icon

Some freeware programs have icons which I would prefer to change
(personal use only).
Can I use ResHacker or is there something else I should use? Anything to
be aware of when doing this? I tried ResHacker and it worked on one .exe
but another one bombed out.
Thanks

====================

Increasingly many more program executables, DLLs, and other library files,
are
being compressed at time of release to sale or availability. And, there are
myriad
algorithms for compression. The reason is not merely to make a smaller
file, but
also to prevent the very thing you want to do ... reverse engineer an
author's work.
Your single success with ResHacker happened to be a non-compressed work.

As has been pointed out, in some cases, ResHacker will allow you to do
exactly what your wanting to do, however, in the case of programs written in
VB (and VC and Delphi I believe), it's more likely to screw the program's
executable.

Friendly advice follows. Note the smiley ---> }:O)

Don't hit return at the end of your lines. Let them wrap normally.
Otherwise, this is what others see (above) making your posts difficult
to read.

[snipped useless, broken AVG sig]

The AVG sig serves NO purpose whatsoever, and does not comply with the
'dash-dash-space' delimiter so that it gets automatically snipped by
compliant news readers.

http://www.chemie.fu-berlin.de/outerspace/netnews/son-of-1036.html#4.3.2

Please open AVG and disable the sig completely. AVG can NOT certify
anything of the sort, and if your system is clean, the signature is
redundant anyway.

Right click the AVG icon / E-mail scanner tab;
Uncheck 'Certify Outgoing Messages'; and
Apply / OK.

Thanks.

Easy/free solution: Create a Windows shortcut to the .exe then modify
the icon for the shortcut and point it to any icon you want. Or, if the
a shortcut was places on your desktop or your start menu, just modify
the shortcut's icon.
