My wife and I, as well as many others I know, would MUCH prefer to have the
address book dialogues that pop up be sorted by Last Name rather than the
unchangeable First Name sorting. It seems to me that it would be simple to
allow this option. When one is trying to send an e-mail to a number of
individuals, create a new distribution list, or check to see if you have the
correct email addresses for a group of people against an alphabetized roster
that you have just received, it would be greatly simplified if you could go
down the address book in the same order as the list you are working from,
rather than jump around to the first names.

It is simple.
If you need to know how, provide your Outlook version.

Under the Tools Menu, select "Email Accounts"
-Under "Directory", Select "View or change existing directories o
address books" and click Next
-Select Outlook Address Book and click Change
-Select "File As" option.
-Click Close, Click Finish
-Close and Restart Outlook

Note: this will apply to 2 of the 7 versions of Outlook in active use, not
the other 5. That's why we need to know the Outlook version for this and
most other questions posted here.

I have just upgraded from Office Pro 2000 to 2003. On two machines, my
address list is sorted first, last. I have done the change described here and
looked all over, but my address book will not sort last, first.

This does it indeed. My suggestion would be to also make this option
available in the address book through tools - options - properties.
