Challenging Graph problem!

Ok, for one of my assignments I have to re-create a graph from the IPC
(climate change scientists).
I have worked a couple of hours on it, but now I am definatly stuck an
I don't progress anymore, and it is really, really bugging me.

Ok, so here we go: This is the graph we have to re-create, it only i
the TOP graph. (clickable)

I have the datafile, it is just two rows rows, one with dates the othe
one with nrs, so no need to post that I think;) .

So, where did I get? I did get the x-axes marks down (so the dates ar
not messing with the columns), but cannot get the line and th
tick-marks down. Also, how to get the ticked lines on the right sid
and on top?
I chose as chart-type a normal column, there are others lik
"line-column on 2 axes", but if I try to import my data in it I get
complete mess.
Also, I got the tick marks on the left side done, but the tick mark
are a lot smaller than they appear in the 'official' graph...

I hope there's someone here who might give me hints to solve this..
The excel help file doesn't get me any further..
 
Untested ideas...

The only way to get tick marks on the right and the top while retaining
the ones on the left and the bottom is to use the Secondary axis. That,
in turn, requires one to plot 2 series.

There's nothing in the rule book that says you cannot plot the same data
set twice in the same chart.

Do that. Then, double-click one of the series in the chart and from the
Axis tab move it to the secondary y-axis. To create the secondary x-
axis use Chart | Chart Options... | Axes tab.

To move the x-axis to the bottom of the chart rather than have it in the
middle, double click the *y-axis* and in the Scale tab set the 'X axis
crosses at' value to some arbitrarily large negative number.

Format the left and top axis to taste.

Thanks for your very quick reply, it did help!

I am in the meanwhile further thanks to a friend of mine and the reply
here- I got most things sorted, exept for one small annoying thing -
the tick marks on the X-axes. I cannot set that it should cross the
Y-axes at -1, becasue I also have negative timepoints, which 'fall
down' of the axes... (see picture in OP, it is clear)

I managed to get a line there, and with the drawing function one can
draw tickmark themselve, but that is not very scientific... is it?

And further, which is more an interpertation question: In the graph we
have to re-create it states: "The smoothed curve was created using a
21-time point binominal filter giving near decadal averages. Does
anyone have a cleu what this means.
