certain avi and mpg files don't play

Recently I've had a problem with PowerPoiint where certain mpg and avi files
will not play when clicked in PowerPoint. Here are the symptoms, if anyone
has any insight I'd be most grateful:

When double-clicked, the window turns blank.

The problem does not apply to all avi or mpg files, but certain ones will
consistently either work or not.

MS help does describe a similar problem with mpgs, relating to the length of
the filepath, but that is not the problem here.

I can't discern any pattern to the failure to play...I have files exported
from the same app with the same settings from the same source; one will play
and one won't.

Reinstalling the codecs and service packs makes no difference.

Anybody got an idea?

thanks,

Have you definately re-inserted the videos using
insert > movies > from file

after you've put them in the short folder

eg.

c:\myvids\

Well, inexplicably I seem to have stumbled on the fix. MS Support said that
filenames of over 128 characters would cause this problem. None of mine were
nearly that long, but I noticed that the videos that played did have shorter
names (under ten characters or so). So I shortened the longer ones, and
presto, they work too.

Weird, but whatever....
