Certain Animations are not Exportable

I made a slide show that has a couple of animation effects that are lost when
I try to package them for CD, so I cannot share my slide show with friends
without having to change the animations. In particular, the "typewriter"
animation will not export.

I'm trying not to have to change my slide show. Any solutions?

Hello Lucy,

I'm using Powerpoint 2007. I get the feeling that when I use Package to CD,
it strips out anything that may be in compatible with Powerpoint 2003.

What John said.

Also, SmartArt will not animate in the PPT Viewer.

Just a little background on Package for CD in 2007...

PPT 2003 and the PPT 2003 Viewer require the compatibility pack to be
installed before they can open 2007-format (PPTX) files.

The compatibility pack will not run from CD. It must actually be *installed*
in order to run.

Therefore, when you package for CD in PPT 2007, your PowerPoint file is
automatically converted to 97-2003 (PPT) format so that the Viewer can run
it from the CD.

This causes some issues -- like SmartArt not animating, and potential text
animations not working (becaue, like John explained, text using 2007
features is converted to an image when "backsaved" as 97-2003 format), etc.

I think you could run the compatibility checker in 2007 to see what won't
work when you backsave as 97-2003 format -- this should help you get a
handle on what won't work in the Viewer as well. To run the compat checker,
go to Office Button | Prepare | Run Compatibilty Checker.

By the way, there is a 2007 Viewer available for download on Microsoft.com.
Don't let that fool you. It's just the 2003 Viewer plus the compatibility
pack, so it is able to open PPTX files. But the compatibility pack still
will not run from the CD, which means the Viewer running from the CD needs
PPT files, not PPTX files. So...when you package for CD, your file will
still be saved as a 97-2003 PPT format file, even if you're using the 2007
Viewer.

(Note that the compatibility pack and the compatibility checker are two
different things!)

Hopefully that helps explain a little about what's actually happening in the
background.

Yeah, that helps explain it, but doesn't make me happy. What good are these
effects if you can't show them off, except to say "come over to my house and
watch this"?

I will go home and fiddle with the formatting and see if I can get around
the problem. I just really didn't want to loose the typewriter effect. I'm
making the words come up in time with what is being spoken.

Thanks,
Liz

Typewriter should work with the Viewer, though. How is the text itself
formatted? As a test, if you use just plain text, does the typewriter effect
still work when packaged for CD?

I second LizB's concerns. I just ran into two situations where 'Package for
CD' quietly caused animations to disappear. The animation was Entrance/Fly
In. In one case, individual items in a bulleted list had been animated. In
another, individual text boxes on a blank slide were animated.

What made this particularly frustrating is that PowerPoint 2007 had no
problem playing the animation for the PPT file on the CD. The problem only
showed up when the CD was launched on another PC.

The person who originally created the presentation appears to have used some
text effects, probably 'text outline'. PowerPoint 2007 compatibility checker
reported the problem. However, 'Package for CD' only indicated that the
files were being downgraded and did not provide details.

Lack of a 2007-capable PowerPoint viewer on the 'Package for CD' feature of
PowerPoint 2007 makes it really hard to recommend PowerPoint 2007.

Is there any hope in packaging up the PowerPoint 2007 Viewer/Compatibility
Package such that it will run off a CD? The alternative would be to install
the Viewer on the target PCs, which may not be possible in all cases.
Thanks, Norbert

Try installing SP2 for Office 2007. I believe it makes some improvements in
this area.

But you can test it on your own, too. Run the Package for CD process, opt to
"copy to folder" instead of directly to the CD, then double-click the Viewer
EXE file or the BAT file in the folder and run the presentation in the
Viewer instead of in PPT. You should then see what the recipient will see.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no improvement with Office 2007 SP2.
Thanks anyway, Norbert
