Dear Group:

I am setting up some weekly records (52 total records for
the year). I want to be able to put a date in the first
record (like 1/1/2003) and have the remaining 51 records
automatically have seven days from the date of the record
before. Currently all I know to do is to put the
formula "=B3+7" for the second record, "=B4+7" for the
third record, "=B5+7" for the fourth record and so on. I
do not want to type 51 formulas in. Instead is there a
way to generically references the previous cell in the
column? If I could do this, then I could simply cut and
paste the generic formula in the remaining 51 records. If
I am asking a stupid question and there is something else
I should do, please tell me. Thanks for any help. God
bless.

Write your formula into the first cell ("=B3+7"), then use
the fill corner to drag and fill the rest of the row. The
cell reference will automatically change to follow the
pattern.

Chaplain,

no need to type it in, just use

=B3+7

then select cell B4 again, move the mouse pointer to the lower right corner
of B4,
when it changes from a thick cross to a thin, left click the mouse and hold
while you drag
downwards to copy the same series. Without using formula you can use 2
dates, assume
1/1/2003 in B3 and 1/8/2003 in B4, then select both cells, grab a hold of B4
lower right corner
and copy the same way. The bonus using the first method is obviously that
you can just change one date
and it will always change accordingly

Click on the fill handle (the small black square on the
bottom right-hand corner of the active cell) for the first
cell in the column, hold down the mouse button, and drag
down. Excel will fill in the formula for you.
