Cell formatting when pasting from a non-Office application

Are you able to change a setting in Excel so that any copied text, numbers
maintain the formatting in the destination file (versus the originating -
copied from - file)?
I know you can do this in Word, but can't find it in Excel.
Thanks

For ***Non-Office application ***

PasteSpecial>Text.. once copied try...Data>Text to Columns...

Most of the time what i do is copy this to a text editor such as NotePad and
then copy that to excel...so that excel assumes text and numbers..
