Matt

I am using Excel 2003 and the default cell format on every Excel file is
General of course. I want to change it to a different format as defualt
whenever I open Excel. Is there a way to do this? I cannot find this anywhere

Select all cells, change it to the format you want. Do this for each sheet.
Save the workbook as Book.Xlt and give it the file type of Template (do this
part first), and save it in the XLSTART directory - usually in C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\XLSTART
Close the workbook. From now on, every workbook will be a copy of this. If
you ever want to revert to normal, delete this workbook.

Matt,

You will have to create a new Template file for the default format to be
changed.

Open a new workbook. Customize cells as you wish with your number format.

File>Save As Type: scroll down to Excel Template(*.XLT) and select. Name
your
workbook "BOOK"(no quotes). Excel will add the .XLT to save as BOOK.XLT.

Store this workbook in the XLSTART folder usually located at........

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

great, thanks Thomas! That worked fine

No need to delete Book.xlt

Just go to File>New...Blank workbook and the Excel default will come up.

File>New(no ellipsis) or New File Icon or CTRL + n will bring up a workbook
based upon Book.xlt.
