cell backgrounds and css - fixed?

I figured out that what removed the cell background colors from my pages was
when I added "background color: transparent" to the td line in the linked
style sheet. I did this because the html validator told me that for every
css line that had a foreground color, I needed a background color. But since
Netscape 4.8 didn't recognize the background color from the css sheet, I had
put this in the regular html code for each page.

So - I'm better off leaving background color out of td in the style sheet,
even though the validator tells me I need it - right? I'd rather just use
the style sheet parts that work in all the browsers v4 and above, so I'm
pretty far from having a pure css site.

If I'm missing something important here, I'd appreciate advice. TIA

For sure, if I had to choose between what some HTML
validator says and what looks right in the browser, I'll
choose what looks right 100% of the time.
