CDW failure - recording speed related?

Short story:

If I have a combo CDRW described as 4xR/4xW, and
I try to record a rewritable CD that's 12x, will it work?


Long story:

Windows/ME system has an old(06/2000) Samsung
Combo SM-304B CDRW unit. I never used the unit
until today, when I purchased a pack of CDW's(12x,
700mb). Back when this system was new, one apparently
needed complimentary SW for CD recording. This SW
base installed is "Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.02 Standard Edition".

However, all attempts at writing this data CD are pre-
cluded by a notice that the inserted CD always seems
not to be ready. I was pretty sure the new CD(s) are
OK, but I took one to a neighbor's XP system, and
added data to it just fine.

Of course, since I never used this CDRW since system
purchase >5 years ago, there's also a pretty good cha-
nce that the thing just never worked.

I assumed, when buying the 12x CD(s) that the 12x
meant =<12x, but not unusable >12x. Is this correct?

CDrewriteable discs are more finicky than CDRs as well as being more
expensive. Try some CDRs to see if the writer works. It could just be the
media is incompatible with your drive. (hope this isnt true in your case but
the Samsung drives Ive used were neither quiet nor very reliable.)
