With the recent lawsuit of Song and BMG using spyware on purchased CD's I was
wondering if Microsoft's Antispyware detects and removes these programs from
music companies?

MSAS and most other anti-malware scanners do not find rootkits. You could
use SysInternal's Rootkit Revealer but you need the expertise to understand
the results.

Microsoft Antispyware does detect and remove the rootkit-like features of
the First4Internet copy protection as used by Sony.

I don't have any information about the second copy protection method
(SunnComm) that Sony has used, which has also been targeted by malware
writers.

Courtesy of Harry Waldron, another MVP, here's some additional recent
information about this issue:

P.S. Here's also a list of the other 52 CDs to avoid
playing in your PC:

This isn't the only rootkit-like object that Microsoft Antispyware targets
for removal, but it certainly isn't a general purpose rootkit removal tool.
The Malicious Software Removal tool does target rootkit families found in
the wild and removes somewhat more than are listed at its home site--they
only list complete families there, and there are some families for which
they remove some but not all of the related infections.
