This is happening to my Dad's new Emachine. It was working then all of a sudden it
doesn't.
Any things I can try to "fix" it? or do to eliminate causes and/at least diagnose it?
Thanks!
Joe

Sounds like a physical switch problem on the eject button. You could try
taking it apart but that may cancel your warranty should you need to break
any seals. If it's new and still under warranty why not let the maker simply
replace the CD-ROM drive with one that works?

Does this happen to all CDs such as music and program CDs or just to CDRW
and CDRs (if you have Roxio) that have been packet written to? I'm not sure
about XP but other systems require you to use the eject button to allow the
packet writing software to update any changes. If I recall correctly, some
packet writing software even reminds you of this when you try to eject with
the button.

that is true and if you have 'direct CD' or 'IN CD' loaded, sometimes they 'lock' the drive and can only be opened with an 'eject'
command. POP UP window will appear.. a eject command has been initiated, do you wish to proceed? or something close to that.
