CDRW Drives "disappearing"

After running winxp pro for two years on the same machine, the cdrw drives (2) now do a disappearing act. They are there when the machine is booted, but after a short time they can no longer be found in Explorer or My Computer. Upon rebooting, doing a check through Device Manager displays the information that they are functioning properly, with no driver issues. One of the drives cycles through a noise every few minutes as if it's trying to access something on a CD, but no CD is in the drive! The players themselves work only as long as they show up in Explorer. The drives are from different manufacturers. Any ideas??
Thanks.

The drives may need a firmware update. Have you tried this? (this is different than a driver update) I have had a similar problem after a Win XP Pro update. The firmware update fixed my problem.
