the following files are missing;
File c:\windows\system32\wnaspi32.dll does not exist
File c:\windows\system\winaspi.dll does not exist
File c:\windows\system32\drivers\aspi32.sys does not exist
File c:\windows\system\wowpost.exe does not exist

how do I get them?

Explorer is showing the drive as DVD/CDRW, but under properties of hardware, it
is still a DVD/CD rom
still unable to get the recording tab
any other fix I can try?

If you're comfortable with Registry work, navigate to
HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE
When you expand that key, you should see your optical drive
listed in the indented field. Click the drive and then proceed to
the Device Parameters sub-key. You should find a key called
"Writing Device" - check that the key value is set to 1.
The Device Parameters is subbed under the first key after the
ID string of the device, like 5&1b4cde65g....

thanks
I don't have the "writing device" key
