I know this is not a networking problem, but this group did such a great job
on helping with my network, there has to be a hardware guru in the group
also

new win 2000 install on new hard drive on new albatron kx 600 pro mboard
........ bios detects the cd-rw as the master and win 2000 verifies a clean
install in device mgr........... firmware upgraded to latest version for the
LG Electronics cd-rw GCE-8160B .......... driver from LGE is still dos
based.......the win 2000 driver that is currently being used is the driver
default as installed by win2k

problem is after I removed the unit working properly from win98 pc and
installed in win 2000 pc, the door will not open ............press the
button and light comes on and it spins............ but the door never
activates

any ideas would be appreciated

You installed a DOS driver in W2k? Why? And, if they don't
have a W2k driver, toss it and get another cdrw. Mitsumi is
about $50 from Mwave.com. Plextor has FINALLY cleaned
up EasyCD Creator. Surely your time is worth more than
to conduct a research project on some piece of crap that
the makers won't support properly.

Often, when that happens, It thinks that there is a un-closed packet-written
(e.g. DirectCD) CDR or CDRW still in the drive. There is usually a little
pinhole in the front of the drive. Turn off your PC. Then unfold a paperclip
and stick it in that pinhole. Sometimes you have to use a bit of force to
get it to go in. It will disengage the lock and manually force open the
tray.

Without the pinhole, you are kinda screwed. Good opportunity to get that
DVD+RW drive you've always wanted. . .
