cd writer

David Harrison

Hi All,
My problem is that my cd writer won't write. I insert a blank disk and
the pc spits it out. I have checked the properties which state that it is
working fine, but the cd properties says that the cd has no data on it and
no space available. Also I have reinstalled it and NERO but no change, can
anyone help please

David I had the same problem, but bc I am persistent, I kept closing the cd
writer of course until I replaced it.

Optical drives do not have an unlimited life span.. you may well have to
replace it..

Hi,

Run a CD lens cleaner disk through the drive. These are commonly available
at most stores that sell CD media.

This may seem obvious, but I have to ask. Is the "blank disk" by any chance
a CD-RW rather than CD-R? If so, with Nero you need to make certain the
program INCD is installed. Just a thought.

CD-RWs don't require InCD installed.. that program is a packet writer for
using a CD like a 'diskette'..

Well, I certainly have respect for your knowledge (as with all the MVPs) and
your opinions. But I have to add that I cannot write to a CD-RW if INCD is
not installed. I found that out the hard way in the earlier issues of Nero
when INCD was not included in the installation but required separate
downloading and installation. Their support people informed me that INCD
needed to be installed -- I did so, and then was able to write to a CD-RW.
Incidentally on verstion 7 (which was buggy from its first issue) I
neglected to specifically select INCD during the initial installation and
later had to install it.

This is a quote describing INCD:

"Automatically launched when Windows is booted, InCD provides flexible drive
letter access to the CD-RW, CD-MRW, DVD RW, DVD-RW or DVD MRW drive
providing simple drag and drop or direct save options within applications.
Files can be saved, renamed and deleted, just as with other rewritable
storage mediums such as floppy or hard disk. InCD is fully compliant with
the UDF 1.50 standard in legacy mode and UDF 1.02 for MRWAutomatically

using InCD."

Gene I've been using Nero since 1997 and all versions are able to write to
CD-R/W media without InCD being installed. On the other hand InCD can not
write to CD-R media. It can only write to CD-R/W or DVDRW. See the user
guides here if you need more information
http://ww2.nero.com/enu/Downloads.html

The most likely reason that the Nero support people told you to install InCD
was because you wanted to burn files directly to disc from within other
programs. Nero can only burn to media through the Nero program where as InCD
prepares R/W media to used as though it were a giant floppy disc.

Mr. Ohrn --- you've been "around the block" more times than I've been at the
doorstep, and you've been a help to me in the past as well. Let me pose
this info and please explain what I am misnderstanding: This is taken
directly from Nero's Help on INCD (ver. 5):

"1.1. Information about InCD

InCD is a program which formats rewritable discs (CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD+RW and
DVD-RW) in such a way that they can be used like hard disks or floppy disks.
This means that you can save, copy or delete files from any application onto
the disc.

InCD uses only rewritable discs (CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD+RW, DVD-RW). Discs
which can only be written to once (CD-R, DVD+R or DVD-R) cannot be used with
InCD."

If as it was pointed out that rewritable disks can be written directly
without InCD installed, then what is the need of InCD?

Without InCD you can't treat the CD-RW like a disk drive. You have to treat
it as a CD, but you can erase.

Well, that's what I've been saying from the first -- at least I thought. If
I put a CD-RW in a burner drive without InCD enabled or installed, I get
this message: "R:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." I just tried
this and this was the exact error message I received -- with both CD-RW and
DVD+RW.

However, if I have InCD enabled, I can use the CD-RW as a floppy disk. I
thought I was expressing this to the OP in my post. If the OP had inserted
a CD-RW (by error or intent) but had not InCD installed, he would receive
some kind of error message. Is this not so?

Gene..

Some CD-RW's are sold as formatted for packet writing, and will indeed
require Nero's InCD to be installed, or the Roxio equivalent.. look
carefully at the packaging before making a purchase..
