my cd writer shows Sony DVD RW DRU- 710A is working properly but no matter
what program I try to burn with, it does not show a CD in it. If I try to
play a CD in it, it does not find it. I am totally at a loss what to do next.
Help please.....

Is it likely that one of the connections has become loose or not done
properly. It is the ribbon connection which you might try to remove
completely and then put it back.

If this doesn't work, then it is telling you to change it. Most CDs
have a lifespan of 50,000 hrs which means a lifetime but it doesn't work
that much!

Your CD writer is correctly reporting what it is to the system..
unfortunately, it is not reporting back that the laser is either dirty or
non-functional.. try a CD cleaner disc, and if that fails, buy a new CDRW
unit.. they do not last forever..

You should try to be more specific, what burning apps are you using..? Using
multiple installed burning apps is not a good idea, pick one and use it
exclusively..
A good read on burning Cd's in XP, see link..

You may need to use the cdgone.reg file to clear the upper and lower filters
for your device in the registry, then reinstall your choice for the primary
burning app, your call..

I have a similar problem, the drive reads and writes to DVD but does not
recognise a CD when I insert it. Did you find a solution?
Thanks

I'm sorry to say I have not.
