CD writer seems to be OK, but cannot read files

I recently installed a new hard drive (long story) and
reinstalled Windows XP. For a few days things worked just
fine, including my CD writer (otherwise I would not have
been able to use the installation CD!)....however, the CD
writer inexplicably became unable to read anything. When
I put a CD in and click on the device in "My Computer" it
registers as empty. I've opened the box and checked
cords, etc....the device gets power, but seems to quit
reading after a few seconds.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

My CD writer has same problem. At least it still writes. You can get them
very cheap nowadays. See:
http://pricewatch.com They are just cheap pieces of junk, not like when they
cost $300 for a good writer. Replace when needed.
