The existence of CD WRITER IDE 5224 is not recognized by my burner software. The Device Manage says that the system is working and attempts to update the driver results in the message that there is not a better driver match for this device.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the software or the CD writer did not help.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Harjean,

I'm not sure how or why a CD Burning question made it into the xpgames
newsgroup, but non the less, here's some information to help you. :-)

I would use the basic Windows XP built in CD Burning ability. You enable it
through the "Recording" tab in the properties of the burner via My Computer.

This article lists more Windows XP burning tips and troubleshooting information:

Not much help, but this exact same thing happend to me. Try this..

1) Go into Device Manager and delete the CDRW drive from the list. WHen you reboot, XP will reinstall the drive. SOmethies this getsyour software to "see" the drive again

2) If that fails, it may be your drive itself. CDRW drives are quite delicate, and I've seen TONS of threads on other hardware sites where a drive could be read from (seen in Windows Expolorer) but would not be seen by your burner software. If this is the case, you might need a replacement CDRW drive

Have you tried using XP's built-in CD burner functionality? Just put in a blank writable CD, then try to send files to that drive in WinExplorer. You'll have a "Burn these files to CD" option on the left Explorer bar and clicking this will invoke the XP burner app. If this fails to wlrk, then you can be pretty sure it's the drive and not your burner software

Hope that helped!

However, if the built-in functionality in XP *works*, then you might want to
check if your burner software is *OEM* (bundled with and for a specific
burner). Nero Burning ROM, which is bundled with quite a few CD burners, is
usually bundled as OEMware, and as such is *not* cross-compatible. This
pretty much forces you to purchase the retail non-bundleware version of the
same (or other) software for more advanced features (burning/creation of
ISOs, one-button backup, DVD burning, etc.)
