I'm a real newbie so be gentle ... Anything I write to the RW drive (E:) becomes "read only" and can't be edited and saved. The CDs are indeed RW CDs. Help!

If you expect to be able to selectively delete and edit the CD/RW files -
using XP's built-in software - you're in for a disappointment. It doesn't
have that capability. However, a CD/RW can be erased in its entirety, and
rewritten. And files from CD can be copied to the hard disk for editing.

Look here for limitations and capabilities of XP's burning software, and
tips on using 3rd-party programs, if you require more flexibility...

Many third-party software allows you to use the disk as you wish, i.e. as a
rewritable file store. You are looking for "packet writing" or "udf" format
software.

A name that springs to mind is DirectCD, which I think comes with some
CeQuadrat (sp?) software.
