I have a computer with Windows ME and another with XP. I want to copy a file
from the ME to the XP. The original file is not read only according to the
'properties' box. I copy the file, bring it to the XP and it doesn't
recognize the file at all. Thanks.

You successfully copy the file from your ME box and successfully copy it
to the hard drive on your XP box. Is this correct? What does "doesn't
recognize the file" mean? Do you get an error message? What type of
file is it?

You mean XP doesn't show the file in explorer.
May be the file is hidden or set as a system file in ME and when you move it
to XP, it hide the file.To check this, do one of these:
1. Open a cmd and set the path to the folder where you copy the file and
then type the full name [including extension, e.g. confused.txt ] of file.
2. Type the full path including the file name in Run dialog.

When I successfully make a copy at the ME, I bring it to the XP. I put the
CD in the drive, open the drive using 'my computer' and it doesn't show
anything on the CD. It shows no file. The file is a Microsoft Works file.
Maybe a version difference?

You are probably using a packet-writing program on the ME box. Examples
are Nero's InCD and Roxio's DirectCD. You may have an Adaptec program
on the ME box - Roxio purchased Adaptec quite a long time ago. You need
to have the same packet-writing program installed on the XP box or a
UDF reader. I believe both Roxio and Nero have free UDF readers on
their websites for download.

This is the problem with using packet-writing and CD-RW as opposed to
simply burning on CD-R and why I don't recommend CD-RW and
packet-writing for backups.

The solution is to burn a straight data cd onto a CD-R disk with
whatever non-packet-writing burning software you have installed on the
ME machine.
