CD-RW not visible

I updated to Windows XP Pro a month ago. While I was
using Win Me I was able to access a CD-Rewriteable disk
from my DVD-ROM. Now that Windows XP is installed I
simply cannot access any CD-RW disk. I am forced to open
it via a CD-Writer on the network.

Whats wrong? Please help. Its rather frustrating.

Just what, not why (as Paul Harvey would say)...

We have three computers in our house, and I upgraded all
three to XP pro - two from W2000 and one from W98SE. All
have DVD-ROM drives and CDRW drives. The two that
originally had W2000 could no longer access CDs (CD-ROM,
CD-R, or CD-RW) in the DVD-ROM drives after upgrade. If I
deleted the drives in the device manager and scanned for
hardware changes, they became functional until the next
reboot (or maybe power-down). The CD-RW drives worked
normally.

Since then, I have replaced my DVD-ROM drive with a DVD+/-
RW drive, and the problem disappeared. I have also
replaced my hard drive, which resulted in a clean XP
install (there are a *lot* of differences from the
upgrade form!) I have not tried the original DVD-ROM
drive to see if it behaves the same.
