I have been having a problem when I try to burn a CD. And often my pc
refuses to even read a disc! I have gone through 2 burners and my
trusty old 52x cd-rom drive and all of them cannot read any type of
disc! A temporary fix was to uninstall and re-install the cd-drive's
drivers... built in to XP. Then after reading and burning a disc or
two all of the drives fail to read anything again. But why would i
keep having this problem? BTW, I have an external usb 2.0 cd-burner
drive, and the other drives are atapi drives and the BIOS (and the XP
OS) recognizes them. Any ideas/solutions would be appreciated. Thanx
for your time.

You have so many drives that I would look at the PSU. A PSU on its
last leg could give those High speed/power units trouble. It would
also explain the trouble across the board. I would look at the IDE
cable but see that the trouble also involves an external drive. I
guess that has its own PS and might through a monkey wrench in the PSU
theory. But the A7N8X is know to be a power hog all by itself. I have
two of those boards on Win98SE without those problems.

i know with certain ide drivers like the ones that come with the new 3.13
and old 2.45's make my dvd burner not work at all with the DLA software.it
won't read any dvd's or write to dvd+rw's or -rw"s.i had to use the old ide
drivers (nvidia ide drivers or use the ones supplied with windows xp.)BOB

Hi Guys,

This issue has been dogging me for some time. My investigations show
that the motherboard and/or NVidia chipset is to blame. The problem
actually stems from the USB 2.0 ports. By default, these ports are
unable to handle the USB 2.0 activity (regardless of what the box
says) and they close down the port. I have had the same trouble using
a USB 2.0 HDD in an external case. The system loads it and it looks
fine, but as soon as you start pushing it to read or write data, it
actually shuts down the port and it disappears fromt the system.

When it happened to me, I thought I had a bad mobo, so I swapped it
for a new one - with exactly the same outcome. It also appears that
all the nVidia chipset mobo's are similarly affected.

But wait, there is an solution. Its not perfect, but it will get you
up and going. I have a Windows XP system that is now working. Go to
http://www.orangemicro.com/updateusb2win.html and download their
update. Follow their instructions to the letter and you will find that
you can get it going. YES, I know that you don't have an Orange board,
but the drivers seem to understand your mobo and they WORK.

Run their exe and do a shutdown. When you reboot, nothing will have
changed. So what! I hear you say. Well, the trick is to go into your
device manager and reload the drivers to the USB controller. When XP'
wizard starts, select "Install from a list or specific location" and
on the second page, select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to
install". Magically, two new drivers will appear, including a nVidia
one. Follow your nose for the rest of the process. You may get a new
device with a yellow question. Just reload its driver and let it do it
automatically, as the system now knows where to finds its guts.

Let me know if this moves the world for you too.

I actually contacted ASUS helpdesk, but got the parrot answer and they
obviously couldn't give a stuff about their products.
Cheers
Jim

XP doesn't require drivers for drives, only drive controllers.

What drivers are you using?

If you are using the SW IDE drivers from 3.13, try reinstalling without
them, or if not, try installing with them.

Hey Jim,
Thanks for helping me! I think it actually worked! I will have to
do some more tests just to check but I have not had any problems ever
since you showed me that fix. It even recognized my scanner that
never really did work properly! I have done a few test scans and it
is better than before! Thanks again!
