When I copy files to a CD-RW thru WinXP, it will not
allow me to copy more files later. Is there something I
need to do to prepare the CD-RW. I finally bought NERO,
but I would prefer to use Windows if I could get it to
work properly. I am a "little ole lady" with NO CD
burning knowledge, so please....in explicate simple terms.

Peggy,

XP treats CD-RW media just like CD-R media (write once), with the exception
that you can "format" or erase CD-RW media to be used again. Nero comes
with a component called InCD, which supports "packet writing". Packet
writing is what enables a CD-RW disk to be used just like any other disk.

Nero has a component called InCD. I don't know if it is a part of the
default Nero installation but when installed, it will allow you to do what
you want to but it will require that the CDs be formatted, something you
will have to use InCD to do.

This function is known as packet writing and allows you to copy, save or
drag and drop directly to CD and it can be done as often as you wish until
the CD is full.

XP's burning function does not support this. It is similar to CD mastering,
a technique similar to how Audio CDs are made and that is why you have this
issue. The above packet writing software will allow you to use a CD the
same as you would a floppy disk. NOTE: be sure you have a version of Nero
that is compatible with XP as most versions designed for previous versions
of Windows are not compatible with XP. You can check the Nero site for
version and drive compatibility: www.nero.com.

Thanks so much Doug & Michael. This certainly answers
the question of why I have wasted so many CD-RWs with XP.
And Nero as well, since I had no idea what the InCD was
for.
