Hi

A little question. Where is the best place to install cd-rom and cd-rw
drives in big tower case - on top or the bottom of it?

If your PSU is top mounted then I would put it lower. Why? Simply weight
distribution decision on my part. MHO

So that the IDE cable reaches it.

The really big Chieftec Dragon, one of the DA models? I'd suggest arranging
things so they're easy to reach. Your CD-RW will probably want to be Master if
it's on the same IDE as your CD-ROM. Mine are set up that way. But since I
mounted the CD-ROM above the CD-RW, I switched drive letters so they agree with
unit positions.

A standard-length IDE cable wouldn't work, so I had to use a 36".

Myself, I put them at the very bottom of the front door of the case.
I have 8 drives stacked over them in sequence from C: on down but the
bottom of the door is still high enough to be convienent to me and I
don't have your cable constraints. All my drives are in order as to
drive letter tho the CDs are P: (for Plextor) and R: for rewritable.
Decide where it's convienent for you and see if your cable will reach.
You may have to compromise.
Try to keep your drives lower in the case to keep the center of
gravity of a tall case lower but also consider spacing them out for
cooling considerations; another possible compromise.

That`s right, Larc - case is Chieftec DA-01WD :)

My Chieftec is the smaller tower AX-01BLD and my optical drives are in the top
two bays. This arrangement seems to work just fine since they are close enough
to the mb for the cables to reach but far enough away to cut down on cable
clutter.

While there doesn't seem to be a balance problem your larger tower may show
some. I would think that the relation to your ide connectors would be a bigger
factor especially if you balance out with more than one hard drive on the lower
cages.

With the drive rails and the removeable hd cages moving things around at a later
date is not much of a problem if you choose.

Personally...i install the CD-RW into the very top, and DVD-ROM at the
bottom.

I don't think there is a best spot, but some physical separation is wise.

Same here, i have an Aopen H700a tower case, i have the CD-RW as Master and
the DVD-ROM as Slave. Both Plextor models.

I also use the Vantec 36" rounded cable as anything less won't reach the
devices.

That's an excellent case, i really considered that until i saw the Aopen
model. It had support for seven 80mm case fans and a host of other goodies.

It's a huge case with oodles of space and toys, but that Cheiftech also
rocks!

hi
if your chieftech case rocks, I think you need to look at the weight
distribution!
