I use my CD-RW to back up files and to transfer them to another PC. I do not
use the capability for audio, DVD's, Movies, etc. I have been using Roxio
since it came with my PC, but I have had continuous problems with trays
locking, software bugs, etc. If I uninstall Roxio and revert to the simpler,
built-in XP Burner, what am I giving up in terms of speed, features, etc ?.
Again, I am dealing only with data files.

Greetings

The only thing you are giving up is the use of packet writing software (i.e.
DirectCD or Drag 2 CD)

If you burn a lot of cds and cdrw's , you sure don't want to count on the XP
built in burning software. It is too basic and a piece of junk . Your better
off with the Roxio. Upgrade the Roxio for better performance. Jym

I use Roxio with no problems at all on XP - you must use V5 or higher
and downloaded the latest update though.

Yes use the Roxio! When ever you want to eject a cd-RW , find the drive in
explorer + right click it and click on "eject"
I know what you mean but this fixed my problem. Now CD-R's no problems at
all.

You're not giving up too much. XP's built-in burner's "worst" trait is
that it creates a temp folder to hold the CD contents until the burn
actually takes place. This uses up lots of HD space, but w/ today's large
drives it's usually not a real problem. It also allows you to accumulate
stuff to burn over several days, and then finally do the burn. Once you
burn the disk that's it tho; Your next backup must use a new disk.

W/ Roxio's DirectCD you can treat a CD-R like a floppy, just drag stuff to
it to backup, drag stuff off of it to the trash to delete. One disk can
last quite a while. And the regular CD Burner can burn one day, leave the
disk "open" and then append to it at a later date (to a different
"session"). You keed version 5 for XP. [5.02B or later actually].

BTW, Nero BurningROM is the current "best in class". EasyCD is still very
good. But I would spend new dollars on Nero.

Best advice: just read what XP can do in Help and Support Center. If
that sounds like all you need then you should be happy. As the North
Koreans say, "knowledge is dangerous, it makes the people aware of what
they're missing". ;-)

One of the reasons you maybe having problems with Easy CD Creator is that
you installed Take2. The latest update to 5.3.5.10 will remove Take2 and
cure a lot of problems.
