CD RW Function changes since installation of DVD\CD Rewriters

In parallel with other incidents reported in this forum another
related issue has occurred with regard to disc usage and although this
is NOT DVD Disc based but it is an operation performed by a DVD\CD
Rewriter. Moreover, it has occurred coincidentally with the
installation of the LG 4081 DVD\CD drives but could possibly be due to
Windows Update.

I have a set of CD-RW discs with copies of images, written well before
the arrival of the new drives, and when one of these is placed into
the drive and Properties selected by right clicking the Pie Chart
shows fully blue even though they are absolutely NOT full. In the
right hand pane of Windows Explorer there is a file, definitely not
there previously, named 'Non-Allocatable Space' and its size is 0 kb.
Gone is possibility of Formatting by using the right click and
selecting Format because 'Format' is not on the dropdown list. Right
clicking on the DRIVE gives the choice 'Erase this CD-RW' thereafter
the process is handled by the Windows CD Writing Wizard. The files
are marked as ‘Read Only' and refuse to be changed, cannot be added to
and can only be copied for use elsewhere. Using the Erase this CD-RW
facility and rewriting the files to the disc restores the true Pie
Chart Properties by showing the values of the Used and Unused space.
Whilst the disc can now be written to and files overwritten, file
deletion is not a possibility.

I am interested to learn if anyone else has noticed similar changes,

Best regards

Stan

Hi Stan

I havent experienced the problems you have described - sounds a real pain.

However I'm curious to know which brand of discs you are using. Does the
same thing happen with other brands?

Also have you ever tried using Nero for writing to discs?

I know some people have found the built in windows CD writing engine less
than reliable although Ive not had any trouble with it on my system.

Have you ever installed any Roxio CD burning software? Ive known their
products to cause loads of problems and bring many bullet proof systems
crashing to the ground!
