I have recently upgraded to XP from ME. Worked fine prior to installing all
Windows Updates outstanding. Now, both optical drives no longer work. When I
insert ANY CD (programs, data or music), same result:
Drive spins for a few seconds and stops
No CD icon next to cursor
Navigate to drive in Windows Explorer, shows drive letters, no file
information
Right click, no dialog box, Explorer hangs and have to force re-boot with a
power off shutdown.
Drives:
Show in Windows Explorer
Don't know if burning works, playing/running does not. No burning software
installed yet. (Can't CD drives don't work)
Have performed the following:
(1)Uninstalled both drives through Device Manager.
(2)Re-installed both drives after re-boot. No driver installation problems.
Reads all hardware details fine.
(3)Reset Services| Shell Hardware Detection to Automatic. (Path to
executable: D:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs)
(4) Downloaded and ran "autorunenable.reg", "XP_CD-DVD-Fix.exe",
"AutoFix.exe." (from Kellys-Korner.com and dougknox.com)
Still no change. I have numerous programs to re-install and am SEVERELY
stuck.
Any help/ideas greatly appreciated.

Old Versions of EZ CD Creator from Roxio has caused this type of thing
to happen. Check your Add/Remove programs to see if it is listed. If
it is, then it should have been removed before installation.

This article is related to the problem but it requires going into the
registry. I am not sure if a better fix has been found by now as this
is a pretty old problem. Otherwise get back to us if this is not the case.

Thanks for the quick response.
No Upperfilters or Lowerfilters values present in the referenced key
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318})

I should also point out that this is now a dual-boot ME & XP system. Did a
clean install on a new system partition.

EZCD Creator not present on XP drive as of yet.

Oops, I guess I should have read your post a little closer. I did not
catch the part where you said you have no burning software installed
yet. So you did a clean install of XP to a different partition. I also
notice you mentioned everything worked fine prior to installing Windows
updates. Does this mean the CD drives worked before you ran the
updates, or are you unsure of this? Also, what changes did you make?

Yes, both the CD-RW and DVD drives worked perfectly prior to installing 30+
Windows updates (old (2003) copy of XP).
BTW, as part of the Update "package", I installed the High Mat CD update.
After discovering that the drives didn't work, I uninstalled it.

Food for thought... The nice thing about doing a clean install,
everything being fine, and then things breaking after updates is that in
a worst case scenario you could always reinstall Windows and opt out
of the optional updates. In the time we have been going back and forth
you could have reinstalled, but of course the updates still take a while
to download. In the meantime I will post again if I come across anything.

Well I see other instances of this same problem after installing the
High Mat update in previous support posts. I am not sure how widespread
the problem is, and I do not yet see a fix for it. I will post again if
I see a fix. Saying the High Mat update caused the problem is just a
WAG (wild ass guess) but it is likely that it caused the problem since
it is an update specific to functionality on your CD drives. A new
clean install is a horrible fix, in fact it is not a fix, but when you
have no software or personal files to worry about it is sometimes the
quickest way to get around your problem. Uninstalling updates of course
will not always fix a problem caused by the updates... in any case, I
will post if I come across anything.
