Upgraded from 98 to XP Pro. On 98 we had Roxio CD
software. After loading XP I get a message on boot up
about the CD-RW driver is unstable so it then disables it.

Also I am having trouble with windows update. It
downloads but fails to install the critical patches.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

As far as the Roxio software, you appear to be using a version that is not
compatible with XP or you are using version 5 without the necessary updates.
If you are using version 5 of Easy CD Creator, go to www.roxio.com and check
for the latest updates. If you are using an earlier version, you'll need to
replace it with Easy Media Creator or Easy CD Creator version 6 if still
available.

As to the Windows Update issue. Open Windows Explorer, go to Tools, select
Folder options, go to the View tab, be sure "Show hidden files and folders"
is selected and that "Hide protected operating system files" is not
selected, click apply and ok.

Click the plus sign next to the Windows folder, click the plus sign next to
the System32 folder, rename the CatRoot2 folder CatRoot2old. ***NOTE, this
is not the CatRoot folder DO NOT RENAME that. Now, reboot the system. Open
Internet Explorer, go to Tools, select Internet Options, click Delete
Cookies, Delete Files (accept the option to delete all offline content) and
click Clear History and try Windows Updated again.
