CD-RW Drive

Hi All,

Probably an easy question but just a case of knowing how to do it.

I have a load of laptops which I am going to connect to a network but they
have all come with CDRW drives as standard which I wasn't expecting.

Apart from removing all the drive is there any way I can stop all users from
burning CD's on them.

One option I think is to not install any CDR software but surely they could
download some program which could burn CD's and away they go.

Is there any way to make the PC think that it is only a CD drive instead of
CDRW drive or disabling all burning options.

What is the best option.

Regards

IIRC, 2K only allows users in the administrators group to burn CDs.
Check into that. If that's not the case, you may be able to limit
access to the drive in other ways, including just not informing the
users that it's an RW drive. If there's no markings to say as much,
they're not gonna know the difference...

how about disable device(CD drive) on device manager and lock control panel
(use group policy - gpedit.msc)
or do not give them permission to install software.
(also use Group policy)

disable installation software and device are more realistic, I think.
because most of Laptop has usb and they can connect external drive easily.

If you are using Windows XP then go to Administrative
Tools and open Service Consol. In that there is a service
name called IMAPI CD BURNING COM SERVICE. Disable it.

Hope this would help.

The drive does say that it is a CDRW on the front of it.

Think this isn't true for 2k but its on xp

Thanks anyway

I want them to be able to use it for normal CD's but not as a CDRW, is this
possible in group edit?

Thanks for your help
