cd-rw drive not recognized

Just got a new computer (Gateway) with Windows XP
Professional. I began noticing some spurious cd-rw drive
activity (ie., disk in and writing lights came on with no
disk in drive). Then noticed that the cd-rw drive(E
drive) wasn't being recognized (didn't show up in windows
explorer or device manager). Did a restart and it
reappeared. Now it's not showing up again after start-up.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Hello

Well call gateway or take it back, since it's brand new have them
test it out again and make sure it's working.

I tried to partition my western digital hard drive with
partition magic and my burner letter disappeared. ( I
wouldn't use partition magic. I have subsequently
discovered that a lot of people have had trouble using it
in the XP environment) I was able to restore the letter
by using the restore feature but it's gone and nothing
I've done will bring it back. There is nothing wrong with
the burner.
