Hi-I dislike my cd-rom drive(Dynex). Is there any reason why I can't replace
it, as my reader, with a Sony cd-r/rw drive? I have it as a spare.

Nope, no reason you can't do that at all.

Go into device manager, and locate your current cd rom drive. Remove it from
within device manager.

Shut you system down, and replace the cd rom drive with the Sony cd-rw
drive. Check to make sure it's master/slave setting is set appropiately. (
should be set to the same as your Dynex drive was ).

Once installed, boot up Windows XP, and it should find new hardware and
install the drivers for it. It should then behave as a std cd reader just
fine.

If you want to use it for burning cd's, then you'll need cd burning
software, something should have come with your cd/rw drive, or there is
other burning software out there like Nero as well.

Good luck,

Hi,

Probably no reason you can't do that.

With the low cost of cdrw/dvdrw drives today, you might consider just
getting a dvd burner that does it all.
