CD-Rom won't read any cd

I recently changed out my hard drive and installed Windows XP. I was able to
install other programs with cd's (Antivirus, antispy, office, etc.). Now I
am not able to run any cd's (music, files, games). I did as much as I could
to fix it. Uninstall/reinstall drive, uninstall/reinstall driver, checked
cables, and updated storage (raid) drivers and bios.
When a CD is inserted, a cd icon will appear by the mouse cursor and flash
several times before it eventually stop. Went to "My Computer" to open drive
and it says "Insert a cd".

CD drives are relatively cheap and easy to replace. Why waste
the time?

Because I know this one works. I also read other postings and getting a new
drive did not work for them either. I strongly believe it has something to
do with windows. Drive is running, and a cd icon shows up by the mouse
cursor.

Try the fix on the page below. Many software programs install drivers as
filters between the optical drives and Windows, but some of them do not
uninstall cleanly and create this kind of problem.

I'm afraid that didn't work either. The registry key was not there, so I
went to method 2. Uninstalled, and it installed just fine. Tried the cd-rom
again and it still doing the same thing.
I tried opening and closing the drive with no cd to see what happens and it
would flash a cd icon next to the mouse cursor twice and then stops. Put a
cd in, and it would come on and off many more times before stopping. I know
it detects something, just won't run it.

Your problem may be more complicated than mine, but your observations are
identical to the problem that I had. I even purchased a new CD drive to no
avail. It turned out to be the disks. I had been using Imation disks for
years without any problems. After installing Windows XP Home SP2, the
problem you describe surfaced. I switched to Memorex disks, and everything
was fine. I am not recommending any brand over another. I simply report
my results on two computers.

Don't think that's it either. For one thing, I use memorex disks. For
another thing, I've tried different kinds of cd's, including installing a
game, and all is doing the same thing.

If your computer is set to boot from the CD-ROM, try boot with your XP
install disc. At least that way you can rule out a hardware problem.

I refigured the cmos so that it would only boot from cd-rom (and xp install
disc in drive), it would say "booting from ATAPI CD-ROM:" and then windows
came up. Would the re-install program have come up instead if it did read
from drive?
 
hey i have the exact same problem to yours.. i insert a disc and a cd icon
will appear near the cursor then stop... when i go to my computer to the D
drive nothing is there.. its like it senses that a disc is there but wont run
it...

Assuming your XP disc is bootable, it should prompt you to press a key,
then would boot to the install program. If it doesn't do that, then I'd
say your drive is bad. If it had booted I would have suspected some
software problem, perhaps even a virus or other malware like the Sony DRM
rootkit but that doesn't seem to be the problem. I would double check
that the data cable to the drive is connected properly by disconnecting
and reconnecting both ends and trying again to boot from the XP disc. IF
it still didn't work, I would get another drive.
