CD-ROM quit working

I have Windows XP on an EMachines 3830. My CD-ROM drive has quit working.
I've followed all the trouble-shooting advice with no luck. The device
manager says that it's fine and working correctly, but the computer doesn't
know that there is a CD in the driver. It thinks it is empty all the time.

Thanks for any help or a point in the right direction.

Swap out the drive for a known-working one. If the new drive works,
throw the old one out. If the substitute drive doesn't work, you have a
problem on the motherboard.

It could be the IDE cable also, but im with Malke its probably the drive
itself.

You cant go by device manager because its only reading from the card on the
Drive. It doesnt know if it has a machanical problem or not.
