CD-ROM problem

My CD-ROM drive has not been recognizing disks lately. Are there any
setting I can check to make sure I didn't accidentally change anything?
Could it be something as simple as a needing cleaning? I'd rather not open
up the box before checking into other, less invasive possibilities.

I'm using Windows 98SE on a Protek box (the ol' Fingerhut Special!) The
drive is a 44x read-only.

Thanks!

What do you mean by "has not been recognizing disks"? When you insert a
CD, look at it in Explorer, then remove that CD and put in a different
one, do you still see the contents of the first CD in Explorer? That
could be a fault in the CD drive of not sending a disk change signal.
Awhile back, I also recall that it could happen if the volume labels
were the same (but I think that problem was on a Unix platform).

I think he probably just means that when he puts a cd in the drive, it
doesn't notice that it's there. And yes, in that situation I would suggest
giving the lens a clean. The weird cds with brushes stuck on only cost a
couple of quid and do the trick.
