CD rom not working

I have gotten a digital camera for Christmas and I was trying to install the
software so I could then download the pictures I had taken. I pushed the
button, and it came up with a red light as it usually does, and made the
sound as if it was going to open. However, it did not. I pushed it a couple
more times, and again nothing happened. I did not look into it much then.
However, I was trying to burn some CD's for a project and now nothing is
coming up at all. It again makes the noise as if it is trying to run it, but
no little red light. This has actually been happening for a few days now. I
went to the hardware part of my computer, and after a little snooping I found
that it had been uninstalled somehow. This is the first time I have ever gone
into hardware, and my mum doesn't get on much.
I tried system restore, and went back to the 24 of December. The disk drive
does still not work. Does anyone have any idea how to help me? Is there
anyway that I could re-download it?

Thanks so much.

Your post is a little confusing to me as written. If I understand it
correctly, the cdrom drive started to function correctly when you inserted
the CD with the camera software but it failed to auto-start the setup
program for the camera software. Since then the drive seems to have failed
- no LED light indicating activity when a disk is inserted. You checked the
hardware... How? And how did you determine that the drive had become
uninstalled somehow?

Did I get the story right?

TIP: When auto-play fails to start an installation program, you can use
Windows Explorer to view the contents of the CD. Then double click on the
setup.exe file on the CD to start the installation.

Since you mentioned the drive seemed to be uninstalled when you checked
hardware...

Not very common but can happen: Through the vibration of everyday use, the
connectors for the cdrom drive can become loose. Solution is to firmly
reconnect the drive. Be very careful when working inside a powered down
machine. Even though there is no power, static electricity can damage
internal components. Grab a bit of the case to discharge static from your
body or use an anti-static wristband clipped to metal before touching
anything.

If I didn't understand your post correctly, sorry. Post again and explain
the problem using different words and someone will try helping again.

Not exactly. I got the camera and I wanted to install it, and the CD Rom
drive would not open at all. And I was looking on the control panel, I found
Hardware: Troubleshooters. So I went on the thing that said you could restore
it. So I restored it back to the 24th of December. And it still did nothing.
Can anyone else help me?
Thank you much once again.

The drawer is jammed or broken. Many cdrom drives have a small pinhole on
the faceplate. If you straighten a paper clip, you can insert it in this
hole. Push to "pop" the catch holding the drawer. If there is a CD in the
tray, remove it. Then try closing/opening the drawer (with no disk in the
tray) a few times. If it works, then insert the disk being careful that it
is lying flat in the tray. Close the door and hopefully the drive will work
as expected.

If the door is broken, it's not usually worth the $ to get it fixed.
Replace the drive with a new one.
