First let me say it took me 3 steps to get XP upgraded.
I had to upload Windows 98, then upgrade that to Windows XP home edition,
now my CD Rom doesn't work. I just now decided to ask someone it has been
almost a year since that transaction. Since then I have acquired a usb
external cdrom drive. I am thinking now I can have 2 cdroms going if i can
get my original one working...any help is appreciated.

There is no requirement to install the earlier version of win during an
upgrade, you just need the cd available to point to during the installation
when your upgrade complains that it cannot find a QA
Usually a winxp upgrade goes well but it can go wrong as the o/s are
completely different, in the way they are coded.
After the upgrade you installed chipset and other drivers from the manu
sites and NOT winupdate?

Hey DL,

Thanks for your reply...I don't understand your question though...One other
thing I forgot is when I put any type of CD in the drive all it does is
click..click...click, maybe that will further explain my problem, oh and I
hate to be a bother, but I am not as savvy as I sounded in my earlier post
although I did take some A+, Net+, MSCA, and CCNA classes a couple of years
ago, didn't finish cause I could not pass any of the exams....

If your cd drive is making that sort of noise, then likely it has failed

When you install a new/different operating system you need to visit your
motherboard web site, or PC maker if a large OEM like Dell
to download and install the motherboard chipset and other drivers e.g. video
driver, which if a card you obtain from the vid card manufacturers web site.
You should NOT use winupdate for drivers.

Thanks DL and Jaymon both of you were a great help DL I think I will try your
last post. Jaymon I am working with a Microsoft support person via email and
she seems to be helping to. Thanks again and I hope your new year is filled
with all the blessings you can handle. Peace and blessings to you both. I
will be sure to come back when I get another cpu issue I can't handle. Thanks
a bunch!
