CD-ROM installation failure

My computer has stopped recognizing my DVD/CD-ROM drive. The bios finds the
drive OK, the Windows XP professional version finds the drive OK when it
does a hardware scan. It then says it had a problem installing the hardware.
The Device Manager under System shows the correct identity of the drive, but
shows a problem. When I open the properties widow, under the general tab it
shows:
****************************************************************************
*******
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot
find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.
****************************************************************************
********

This drive has always been working in this computer. I have substituted 2
different known good
drives and changed the IDE interface with no effect.

What's going on?

"CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP"

(I believe that there may be other ways of getting the Registry keys than
uninstalling Easy CD Creator.)

For an automated fix,

Just getting rid of the "upperfilters" and "lowerfilters" entries may not be
adequate. I once upgraded ECDC on a Win2k machine, and ended up having to
manually clean the Registry and do a fresh installation of a newer version
of ECDC before the CD drives behaved properly again.

Good luck.

.
Sounds to me like a motherboard problem, if indeed you
changed the cd or dvd drive with no success. It could
also be the hard drive, depending on the motherboard. Do
you have any other OP system anomolies?
