Cd-rom icons

When inserting a cd into my cd/dvd rom drives, nothing happens at all.
I get no windows prompting me for an action to take.
Also, the cd-from icon in "my computer" does not change to the icon
associated with the cd. I have checked the setting in the device manager and
all are as they should be. I have even uninstalled the cd-roms and
re-installed them.
When i do get an icon from a reboot, this doesn't change even after the cd
is ejected.
Is this a SP2 problem???

I have the same problem. I reflashed the motherboard bios and this had no
effect. I chatted with a microsoft online tech suport guy who told me my cd
drive is no good. I wiped my HD and reinstalled XP SP1 and the drive works
good. It seems that this is an XP problem but MS has no clue how to fix it.
