CD Rom Help Please

My cd rom cannot read or play discs. Device manager does not show any
problems & states everything is working properly, I've followed the
troubleshooter as far as I can, it suggests I roll back the driver but there
is no backup driver available, any suggestions please??
 
Are you getting error messages? What do they state? Try this:
Reboot PC, insert music disk, if AutoPlay is activated, the disk should play.
Try several different music CDs to make sure. How to activate AutoPlay:
Start>My Computer>rightclick CD-Rom>Properties>AutoPlay tab>
Music files>under Action select your media player>Apply>OK
 
Hi the only error message I get is no cd in drive when ofcourse there is. I
followed your instructions and things went ok for awhile but tracks are
skipping, this morning I tried again and nothing!! Also something that has
never happened before until today the cd tray got stuck so had to reboot,
when its trying to play its making a kind of ticking or scratching noise,
sounds bad to me!! I also can't play any cd roms at all. Any more
suggestions please although I think I know what you're going to say! This
has only come about since XP sp2 was downloaded, any connection?? Many
thanks for your help.
 
I think you have surmised the inevitable. Your CD-Rom needs to be replaced.
You can go to eBay and get them very cheap. You'll only have to remove a
couple of screws and disconnect the power and data cables to install a new
drive. A repair shop will charge $40 just for the labor plus the cost of a
new drive. You
can get a CD burner or also a DVD/CD burner combination and should come with
an installation disk. All you do is remove the old one, install the new one
and reboot. WindowsXP will let you know that new hardware was found and just
follow the prompts. Good luck. :~)

im having a problem with playing a cd bought from a shop to play in my
cdrom,it plays ok on my hifi,but not on my pc,i have windows media player
10,and the cdrom plays other cds
 
I have this same problem except I own a laptop, thus removing a few screws
and such is not as simple... any suggestions.
